The traditional way of delivering crowns requires a lot of time: time off work, and time traveling to and from the dentist’s office.
The modern way. One visit. About 2 hours.
- We powder your tooth so that our small intraoral camera scans your existing tooth in seconds to create a 3D model of your tooth.
- The dentist removes the outer part of the tooth.
- We then scan the ground down tooth in a few seconds, to ensure an accurate impression.
- Your new tooth is milled by our in-office milling machine.
- The crown is tried in, checked for fit, and then hardened in our oven.
- We make any final adjustments and cement your crown so it is comfortable to you.

The digital imaging/impression can enlarge the tooth and its margins 300%, also showing the surrounding tissues, opposing teeth, and occlusion. This is what makes the fit so accurate!
The traditional way. 2-3 visits. Hours of your time.
- Assistant makes an impression of your old tooth with slimy goo-filled trays that are rarely comfortable, if not outright painful.
- Repeat this step if the impression was not perfect.
- Dentist removes the outer part of the tooth.
- The assistant takes another impression of the ground down tooth.
- Repeat this step if the impression was not perfect.
- Wait for the temporary tooth to be made, polished, and cemented in.
- Live with the temporary crown for 2-3 weeks, while your waiting for the permanent crown to be made.
- There’s 30% chance your temporary crown will come off, which will require another visit to the dentist to get it glued back on.
- 2-3 weeks later, the permanent crown arrives, so you need another appointment to get the crown fitted, modified and glued in.
The old way vs. the new way

Why doesn’t every dentist practice like this?
We receive this question all the time. Here is what we think:
The technology is expensive.
The CEREC machine costs almost $200,000. Then there is the cost of time and training. Many dentists don’t want to make the investment.
It requires extra training.
The cost of materials. More comfortable chairs and operatories.
Is the traditional way ever appropriate?
Yes. There are specific cases where the old way is preferred.
It’s never a good idea to discard a traditional technique, especially if it works. In some cases, it can better to do molded-impressions with a temporary crown – and send away for a lab-produced tooth.
Consider a patient that grinds molars during sleep. Over time, these molars (even molars with crowns on them) may break.
In the case, a zirconium crown on the molar may be considered. Zirconium crowns, under normal conditions, are unbreakable. Unfortunately, CEREC cannot produce same-day Zirconium crowns.
